Schwarzenegger's Victory Showcases the Good, Bad
and Ugly for Christians

The October 7th California Special Election showcased another example of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly for Christians.

The Good: By a landslide margin of 55%-44%, the people of California recalled Governor Gray Davis.

The Bad: A 48% plurality voted to elect another liberal, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to replace him.

The Ugly: Christian voters have been bamboozled again.

It is now official. With the election of Schwarzenegger, the Republican Party is the home of pragmatic moderation and social liberalism.

Although 13% voted for conservative Tom McClintock, many conservatives actually cast their vote for Schwarzenegger with the goal of ensuring a Republican governor regardless of his conservative credentials. Many favored McClintock over Schwarzenegger, but thought he "was not electable."

The fact of the matter is that Arnold Schwarzenegger is a total liberal when it comes to issues that matter to Christian voters. He is completely Pro-gay and Pro-abortion, and has made it very clear that he will be surrounding himself with many like-minded social liberals from the Hollywood scene.

Ironically during last Tuesday's victory speech, Schwarzenegger proclaimed that he plans to "represent everybody" from "all walks of life" as governor.

Does anyone see the logical impossibility that his statement entails? Do Christians realize that Schwarzenegger's promise is totally unattainable? Not hours after he has become Governor-elect, Schwarzenegger lied to the people of California.

Here's why:

The moment someone adopts a certain position on a particular issue is the same moment that he opposes the antithesis. The law of non-contradiction basically says that "A" cannot be "non-A" at the same time and in the same way. You cannot be Pro-abortion and Anti-abortion at the same time in the same way. Therefore, Schwarzenegger cannot possibly represent both factions on any one issue. To do so is to adopt contradictory positions.

More importantly to Christians, Schwarzenegger subscribes to the anti-Christian view that homosexuality is a legitimate "alternative lifestyle" and that women should have the "right to choose" to abort their babies. Therefore, contrary to his big tent victory speech, Schwarzenegger cannot possibly represent the Christian voter when he unabashedly opposes their issues.

Schwarzenegger's election was no doubt helped along by the typical Republican Establishment strategy of fear-mongering. This strategy has been perfected to the tee: "The conservative candidate is 'unelectable'; therefore, vote for the candidate that at least 'has a chance' to win. Otherwise, we'll be saddled with another Democratic governor."

I'm sure you've heard this one before ad nauseum.

What difference does it make to conservatives and Christians whether California is governed by a liberal Democrat or a liberal Republican? Both are liberals, and Christians lose!

In fact, I would rather have a liberal Democrat at the helm because at least we know what we're getting: the Democrats are supposed to be the liberal party, while the Republicans are supposed to be the "conservative party". (The key phrase here is "supposed to be".) Any Republican who adopts liberal positions, especially on the important issues of sodomy and abortion, is actually a Democrat in conservative garb.

Schwarzenegger is the latest prime example of this type of Republican selected by Californians with the help of conservatives.

The sad thing is, for Christians stuck in the Republican Party, that this type of Republican has now become the norm.

The mere election of such a Republican to the governorship in California has now demonstrated that Christians have become expendable. Moderation and Big Tentism is king in the GOP.

In years past, the Christian block was carefully wooed to ensure that they would not bolt the party and "give the election to the Democrat".

Today however, the GOP Establishment has honed in on the one key element that will keep Christians entrapped in the GOP: the fear of a Democrat.

Christians will never be able to emerge victorious in politics if they continue to allow fear dictate their activism. They must remember that the gates of hell will not prevail against a unified Christian onslaught. (Matthew 16:18)

It is time that Christians quit sharing the political table with their enemies by settling for scraps. Instead of merely settling for a meaningless place at the table, Christians must become the owners of the table.

The only way for Christians to start making a difference in this post-modern culture is to create a party of their own: a party that will never compromise or split the difference - inside or outside of its walls.

Perhaps such a party will not achieve immediate victories right away. However, a party that is unmistakably Christian and puts principle above pragmatism will absorb the millions of GOP voters into its ranks. At that point it can then seriously challenge the Republican Party as the conservative alternative to our entrenched socialist establishment.

For decades, the American culture has continued to decline to such an alarming level that Sodom and Gomorrah resemble a Sunday afternoon walk in the park by comparison. As long as Christians, entrapped in the GOP, continue to support liberal politicians like Schwarzenegger by use of "pragmatic" politics, the further our state and nation will continue to erode.
